BOCCE – BOWLING

In 1973, when the land for the Slovenian Club Jadran was purchased, preparations for outdoor bowling were soon organized as the majority of members are from the coastal area of Slovenia and bowling plays a big part of the culture of the region. For this reason, it was imperative that the bowls area was built. At first a second building served the purpose and the six-lane undercover bowling arena was completed in 1986.The president of the club at the time was Franc Iskra. The work was organized and supervised by the builder Franc Vojvoda. As with all other works, this was also completed by donated materials and voluntary labour. Bowling for our people is not only a sport but is also for company and enjoyment. Bowling began as entertainment but soon became an organized and serious competition between clubs. At one time the bowling group was a member of the Victorian Inter-league Bowls and the president was Franc Iskra. As the bowling became more organized, the rules of play were more strictly enforced. In the history of Bowls at the Jadran Club, the referees were Franc Iskra, Silvo Jurisevic, Rudi Iskra, Jože Dekleva. Occasionally there were others. On two occasions, the bowling team competed in Slovenia when the games were hosted there and Slovenian bowlers also came to Australia when it was our turn to host them

 SENIORS BOCCE

Seniors Bocce was founded in 1996 at the suggestion of Slava Crooks, who led this activity for many years. Marica Valencic and Ana Iskra assisted. Upon retirement of Slavica and Ana, Maica Valenčič took over leadership and when she retired, the position was taken by Zlata Vitez and Elsie Kumar. The Seniors Bowling Group meet at the club weekly on Wednesdays.

The bowlers challenge each others’ abilities in friendly competitions. Before bowling, all present are served coffee and cake, and at end of play, there is a light lunch of open sandwiches and at times a hot meal.

At the end of the year, a festive meal is prepared, or there is a restaurant meal followed by group photos.
